Publisher info

The first part of my life was dedicated to the service in the Soviet Navy during the Cold War years; the second one - to the teaching of English language (ESL) and to the translation from English into Russian. I translated a number of printed books and albums on Art, Photography, Cinema, Architecture & Design, Literature, Music, etc.
I am greatful to my family, my teachers, comrades and collegues for the chance to live the life I wished to. Thank you.

P.S. I think, I am the first person on Smashwords, who decided to pave the way for indie translators (from English into Russian, at least), who wished to have chance to chose original texts in English, translate them and publish at Smashwords (with the permission of original authors, of course).
If you wish to have your work translated from English into Russian and publish it in Russian language on Smashwords I will be glad to help you, In any case your original copyright wil reside with you, and you will be able to request or permit any other Russian translator to make translation of your text. I will stay the owner of my translation copyright only.

Smashwords Interview

What is your favourite occupation?
I like to decode, what exactly an author wanted to tell his readers and why? And, of course, I like to find such words in my native Russian language, that render his or her thoughts and moods best. It is like choice of shades for a painting, or notes for a symphony.
What is the best way to contact you for the first time?
I don't like to spend time with social networks. Better e-mail me on

Smashwords book reviews by Boris Seaweed

  • Prattleings of an old man! on Dec. 12, 2014

It is the book worth reading. Especially for non-americans and those who don't know, what it means to be raised in the family of the military. Thank you.
  • A Hot Time in the Cold War on Dec. 14, 2014

Rather interesting recollections about life and observations of the US military diplomatic worker in Moscow in the mid of 60's. Worth reading.
  • The Bible Naked: Genesis on Dec. 27, 2014
    (no rating)
I was born and raised in the atheist country (the USSR), and from the school years was told and knew a lot about descrepances in the Biblical texts (there was even widely published book 'Bible for non-believers'. Is there any sense in finding new descrepances? If people want to believe in God they believe in him, and no contradictions in the holy books would prevent them. I think, there is no sense in finding some new contradictions in theology. To my mind religion is a remedy for the souls of those who believe. Life is not an easy matter. Let people's spirituality help and guide them, if they have no other guidelines and remedies.
  • A Man And His Ass on Aug. 24, 2015

Good story with poetic mood. But some remarks. First, the title 'A Man and His Ass' sounds a bit dubious. To my mind 'An Old Man and His Donkey' looks better (Hemingwayan). Second, did you really need that strange crazy horseman, riding nowhere?
  • Morning Patrol on Aug. 29, 2015

Very inventive. Good language. A lot of historical details.
  • Beyond the Strandline on Sep. 05, 2015

The book raises and reminds the readers about global survival problems of nowadays. The style of the author and composition are in some ways identical to Nevil Shute's and Arthur Hailey's ones. To my mind the drawback of the book is in the lack of the solid subject line, connecting all its contents.
  • NASA and the Mars Gold Rush on Sep. 28, 2015

Very inventive story with humoristic and a bit sarcastic view on modern political systems and moral of the human race.
  • Папа Жора on Nov. 30, 2015

Отличный сборник. Читается легко и приятно, хотя не все составляющие его произведения в равной степени совершенны. В любом случае, кроме того, что доставляет наслаждение, заставляет задуматься (thought-provoking).
  • Perry Scrimshaw's Rite of Passage on Dec. 08, 2015

Fate moves an orphaned but sharp-witted Perry Scrimshaw from the docks and slums of Victorian Southampton to severe prison in Buenos Aires. But his desire to survive at any cost and reunite with the girl he loves is irresistible. The author managed to combine Dickensian descriptiveness with Charrièrian inventiveness. I have read the book in one sitting.
  • Клирики on Dec. 30, 2015

    Занятно... познавательно и поучительно.
  • Beware of Dog on Jan. 16, 2016

Just the twist as in the Roald Dahl's story 'Beware of the Dog'.
  • Wake-up Call on Feb. 03, 2016

Rather unexpected twist is an unfailing feature of Rik Hunik's stories.
  • Neelie's Story on Feb. 28, 2016

    Capturing story.
  • The Less Fortunates on May 22, 2016

    Interesting and instructive reading.
  • Whisky Tango Foxtrot...Copy? on June 19, 2016

Thought-provoking and captivating book, written in smooth English and interspersed with Australian everyday spoken language, idioms and slang. Describing different sides of Australian life (the Navy, business, university life, Sydney city life, fashions, etc.) the author also delves into the recent history (Vietnam war and antiwar movement, politics, etc.). He also dares to weave into the plot and connect with the main character his version of mysterious disappearance of Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt on December 17, 1967. And it is also charming love and family story. Personally I have read the book in one breath. (review of free book)
  • Party Ship Of Death on July 04, 2016

Reassuring reading. Incredible fantasy. Easy style.
  • A Singular Captain on July 12, 2016

This historical novel is a literature monument to Ferdinand Magellan and the men of his expedition who first circumnavigated the Earth about 500 years ago and proved in reality that our planet is a globe. It is also a tribute to ‘supernumerary’ Antonio Pigafetta on whose diary the book is based and who in fact was a secretary and scientist of the expedition. The author has done a great job studying, reinterpreting and giving vitality to Pigafetta’s records, penetrating into the nuances of the World political situation, religion issues, discoveries in geography, cartography, astronomy and navigation at that time and allotting psychological features to the people closely associated with the preparation and conduct of the expedition, as well as to those, whom they met on the way or who tried to destroy it. The fact that the author, professional sailor himself, has repeated the route of the expedition under sail makes this book unique.
  • One for the Road on July 31, 2016

    Charming story...
  • A Scabbard Full of Vengeance on Aug. 01, 2016

    Chekhov style.
  • The Old Man in the Hospital on Aug. 30, 2016

Simple, clear, positive and thought provoking story. Worth to read and follow.
  • Night Flight From Saigon on Oct. 01, 2016

  • Consolation of the Rose on March 06, 2017

    Very touching...
  • The Garden on Sunset: A Novel of Golden-Era Hollywood on April 03, 2017

An interesting read. The author did a great research and artistic job depicting Los Angeles and Hollywood during its Golden age. The reader can not but sympathize with the amicable young trio with all their picularities seeking success and helping each other in difficult situations, that are abundant on their way. Thank you, Mr. Turnbull.
  • Overcoming the Odds: From War on the Streets in Louisiana to War on Terrorism in Iraq, How I Successfully Overcame the Odds on May 06, 2020

Very instructive and optimism generating book, written by a person who overcame many adverse circumstances and difficulties on the way to his goal - to become a medical doctor and help people. Interesting read, written in clear language by an observant person.
  • Twenty One Months on July 18, 2020

Very interesting book, written in a beautiful language, which seems to have served as the beginning of the disclosure of the author's undoubted literary talent. It is full of descriptions of real life episodes, memories and reflections of this extraordinary person, who managed to overcome the unfavorable circumstances of the initial period of his life. It perfectly complements the library of memories of the participants of the Vietnamese campaign and allows you to get a complete impression of what was happening at that time.
  • Dire Circumstances - The Great Depression on Sep. 24, 2020

A detailed description of the life circumstances of a typical American family in the 1920s and 1930s. Lots of details. The author undoubtedly did a great job remembering and supplementing his memories with archival materials. In my opinion, the book is good for leisurely, thoughtful reading.
