Selfishgenie Publishing

Publisher info

Selfishgenie Publishing is a boutique publishing house dedicated to providing a service for unknown, or relatively unknown, authors and allowing them to become better known. At the same time, we want readers to discover new work by new authors, while enjoying their reading experience.

Our philosophy is that readers can’t know if an author is worth reading until they have read one of their books, therefore those books need to be available for them to read.

The world of publishing has changed over the years. Few of the large publishing houses deal directly with authors anymore. They deal with literary agents. Literary agents, on the other hand, deal only with authors that they think will appeal to the large publishing houses. This incestuous arrangement means that books have to be guaranteed best sellers to attract the interest of agents and that means that the agents are unlikely to take risks with new and unknown authors.

For the unknown author, this means that it is difficult to catch the eye of an agent. Of the hundreds of thousands of authors writing in the world today, only a handful will ever see their work published by one of the big-name publishing houses. It means that thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of good authors aren’t able to get their work published simply because publishing houses don’t take on enough new authors each year, because taking on new authors is a gamble. Here at Selfishgenie Publishing, we believe that isn’t fair.

As a small publishing house we can’t take on every author who wants to be published, but we can take a few risks. We can give a few unknown authors the break they deserve, while at the same time offering readers the chance to discover the next big name in publishing before their books become expensive to buy.

We hope that on this website you will find an author that you will enjoy reading and that you will help to spread the word and encourage others to take a chance on one of our books.

Smashwords Interview

Describe your desk
Frankly, it's a mess. I'd like to keep it tidier, but I never seem to have the time. Which is ironic, because I always have the time to go rooting through all the papers to find the bit I'm looking for!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Well, we're a publishing house, but our staff are all British. We also write, because writing is such a release. But the thing we love most is being inspired by new authors.

A modern take on the classic Christmas morality tale of Victorian England. The protagonist is the same money grabbing old skinflint; the ghosts are the same (well, almost); and it's the same story (well, it's similar). But don't tell this one to the kiddies on Christmas Eve and don't think you know how it's going to end.
