Shyreen Tyler

I was born with my head in the clouds. As a child, my two best friends lived in a flower which was part of my room's wallpaper. During my youth, when I wasn't at school or doing homework, fantasies filled my time.

Thanks to my parents, reading became more than a hobby. It became an addiction. My mom used to read bedtime stories to me and my 3 siblings. My dad was subscribed to a book club that would send him new books every month. Our library was filled with stories of all genres. Reading covered my need for other worlds, other lives. It fueled my fantasy world, where I felt so comfortable.

People who love reading eventually attempt at writing. Many years had to pass for me to dare. While taking writing classes, an idea popped in my head which became my first book, Home by the Sea, published in 2014.

I'm in my forties and my head is still in the clouds. Thankfully, I'm not alone. Many characters and their stories are there with me. Eventually, they will come to life and hopefully, I will share them with you.

Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
I first write the main plot, what the story is about, how it starts and how it ends. I define the characters and their back story. I usually do this first part by hand, in a notebook. Then, in my computer, I write the story from start to finish, without paying attention to the words or the structure as a whole. I just let the story get out of my head. After that, I read it again and make notes, by hand, on what needs to be changed, what can be improved and what can be deleted. Entire parts of the book might change at this point. A third reading takes place, where I take care of the details like grammar, words replacement and sometimes providing more context and color to the story. Once I'm satisfied with the final reading, I consider it ready for editing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez: I read this story when I was in high school and through my life, I've read it a couple more times. The way that the story of the town, Macondo, and the story of the Buendia family are interwoven. How the mistakes of one generation affect the next. How the sins of the characters are inherited. The fact that they cannot escape their destiny regardless of what they do. The magic and spiritual world existing in real life. Everything about that book is just perfectly done.
Harry Potter by JK Rowling: Ms. Rowling is one of my favorite writers. Thanks to her I decided to attempt this art. Harry Potter might be intended for a young audience, but the story, the characters and situations are attractive to all ages. Of the seven books my favorites are Goblet of Fire, Half Blood Prince and Deadly Hallows. Her writing is very easy to follow. Scenes that seem completely independent relate to other scenes in other books, which makes you think if she made it on purpose or if it was a happy coincidence. What she did was truly amazing. Since I read Harry Potter I realized I was born in that world, I attended Hogwarts and, of course, I was from Griffindor.
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel: Another Hispanic tale that I love. The story of Tita and how she poured her feelings into her food, affecting those who ate it, it's beautiful, sad, funny and tragic.
