Simon James

I was born in Wiltshire in the 1960s and have worked as a surveyor, Royal coat attendant, barman, pay clerk, outdoor instructor, and project manager.

I have loved music ever since I could twiddle the dial on my first radio; my favourite bands are Faithless, Alabama 3, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

My own musical moments include reaching the scary heights of grade 4 violin, bumping into Simply Red in a nightclub, making a guitar from a shovel, and - more recently - singing backing vocals on a catfish website advert jingle.

I love books, stories, music, mountaineering, the outdoors, and movies.

I am learning the shovel slide guitar. Slowly.

I am one of the winners in Striking 13's 'Betrayal' writing competition.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
About 6 years ago. I'd just read 4 books back to back, and while I was looking for the next thing to read, I thought, 'why don't I try to write one?'
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
2 things: getting lost in my own world, and other people getting lost in my world.

My professional singing debut
As part of my research, I spent a day with the band Plum Duff, in the Banana Row Studios, learning about the recording process. At the end of the day, they invited me to sing (or shout) on the chorus of this song, promoting a catfish website! Fantastic day, and my first (and possibly last) recording gig. Thank you Plum Duff!
