I won a national poetry contest while I was a Freshman in college at Louisiana Tech University. I was moved by the English professors and enjoyed reading Wordsworth, who taught me that everyone is important; William Blake, who inspired me with his wild imagination and concern for the poor; and Emily Dickinson for her conciseness.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in St. Louis and Dr. Seuss was used at our schools. I enjoyed libraries when I was a child and used to check out big arm loads of books during the summer. "Gulliver's Travels" was introduced to me by a teacher when I was in the second grade.
When did you first start writing?
During high school I think. I still have some of my journals from hs and won a national poetry contest while a Freshman in college.
