M.L. Strickland

I was born in Cleveland and grew up in Canton, Ohio. I attended college, married and gave birth to two sons in New York City in the 1960's. Divorced and remarried, I moved to Florida in the 70's, where I enjoyed living near the water and had many adventures. My daughter was born in 1987, and I received a B.A. in Creative Writing from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg in 1998. Since then, I have been writing, editing, and having more adventures.

Smashwords Interview

Who are your favorite authors?
I think my favorite author of all time is Melville, who demonstrated an understanding of the human soul in an uniquely American way. The moral dilemmas of his characters are as relevant today as they were in the 1800's, and his narratives take me on a journey that evokes both hightened feelings and a great sense of adventure.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to cook, and spend a fair amount of time experimenting with familiar and unfamiliar recipes in an effort to create meals that are both healthful (mostly) and delicious. After a trip to France last summer, I devoted myself to cassoulet, a dish of beans, wines, herbs and duck. Fortunately, it turned out well, and pleased my dinner guests. When not cooking, I'm usually reading, writing, or editing and on Sundays I play golf.

The early 1970s: the war in Vietnam has left the country shell-shocked, and society remains in recoil following the assassination of JFK, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. On the West Coast of Florida, three friends begin a search for meaning in the shade of a local tavern, embark on an incautious midnight sail, and make friends and enemies while living just below the surface of society.
