What sparked you to start studying influence?
“I pretty much grew up in a Mark Twain Novel.” Says de Grosbois. “We’d spend our summers in a remote boat-access cabin. There were no other kids to play with but my siblings, so I was often getting left behind and trying to keep up them. So importance became an important topic to me. Starting at the age of 3.

I started studying influence, because I had none. But watch highly influential people, and you’ll realize that it’s almost like they’re playing a whole different sport than the rest of the world. Their etiquette and rule book is different than the one we learned in business networking.”
What stops most people from becoming influential?
“The biggest thing that stops most people is their inner dialogue or self-limiting beliefs. Leadership books talk about these all the time. Those negative things we tell ourselves in moments of stress. Meeting influential people, or thinking about putting yourself out there and leading in an influential way, tends to turn the volume up to blaring on that negative self-talk. Maybe you tell yourself ‘I’m not smart enough’ or ‘I’m not good at speaking in front of a crowd’ or ‘I don’t have enough credentials’. The scary truth is that only Sociopaths tend not to have inner dialogue that stops them from become influential. So as everyday good people, we need to step up and learn how to be influential, or we resign ourselves to living with the very leaders we fear."
