The Geek

Biography

Being an electronics/computer geek is my hobby. It’s what I work for. For the most part, it’s where most all of my disposable income goes. I work with computers daily, I build them. I keep my family and my friend’s PCs running, and I help them upgrade when needed. I’ve built hundreds of systems over the years.

I consider myself an audiophile. For the past fifteen years, I have been in search of the perfect HTPC (Home Theater PC). I’ve built many. I’ve installed much software, both free and paid versions, to accomplish some task. What I have found is this:

There are many options out there, too many. There is a program to accomplish anything you want to do, for a price.
You can spend as much as you want on a PC, but what do you really need?
There are more front-end software options for the HTPC than you can test in a year, and new ones appear every day.
I’ve done all the hard work for you. I’ve spent money on PC components and software to strike the perfect balance. While there are many guides out on the Internet and most of the information I’ve collected is freely available, I’m putting it all in one place. I will show you step-by-step how to setup and configure a PC so it plays movies beautifully on your big screen. Once you are ready, move on to advanced topics such as using XBMC with MySQL for whole-house media control.

Mostly though, I want to save you time. I’ve spend hundreds of hours going through the options, testing software and hardware, and adjusting settings. I will show the right way, the first time. There are many ways to get to the end result. My setup works great for me and my family and I believe it will work well for you too. So jump right in, take a look at some of my guides and see what you think.
