The Grimy Brothers

Biography

The bike courier hurried along the busy streets with the large fat envelope safely stowed in the saddlebags. Arriving at the unassuming building, he looked at the large brass plaque, which proudly stated, “Bigwig and Snodgrass Publishers.” Grabbing the envelope, he bounded through the door and up the stairs. Bursting into the office, he looked at the title thinking, What a terrible title. Opening his mouth to speak, the young man dropped the fat envelope and fell dead to the floor, clutching his throat as if was he were choking.

The receptionist walked around from her desk and looked down at the man and the envelope. Yes, he was dead, she deduced, by the way he was not moving. Picking up the envelope she read the label. “Manuscript ‘The Evil Queen & The Two Princesses’ by the Grimy Brothers.” She moved quickly to her desk and buzzed her boss.

“Mr. Bigwig we got another manuscript from Jake and Willy.”

“Have you called 911?” he replied.

“Doing it now.”

Later that afternoon during the editing meeting, the newly employed Creative Editor took her blue pen and began to peruse the opening paragraph.

“Sarah, I shall read it out loud while you three follow along,” he told the creative editor.

“The Evil Queen & The Two Princesses by the Grimy Brothers, JAFF, just another friggin’ fairytale,” he read aloud. Not fond of the JAFF, he thought, as a slight pain began in his chest, spreading quickly to his left arm. Then again, it’s brilliant, he thought quickly and the pain subsided.

Sarah looked at the opening paragraph thinking, Well, this stuff is freaking confusing. The blue highlight pen clutched tightly in her left hand, she felt a sudden twitching in her heart.

Finally, after reading the entire manuscript to his team, Mr. Bigwig came to the last line of the story, “May all your ever afters be happy ever afters.”

Mr. Bigwig looked up from the manuscript at his people. All were nodding their heads and saying how much they loved the story. All except Sarah. She sat dead in her chair, clutching her chest with her right hand, still holding her blue pen in her left hand. A look of sheer horror was on Sarah’s face, as if Evil had just placed a terrible curse on her. The open manuscript showed blue markings on the first paragraph and she had written the word ‘unclear’ that ran in a squiggly line off the page.

Mr. Bigwig looked at the dead creative editor and down at the document. Pressing the intercom button, he cleared his throat then in a loud clear voice said, “Mrs. Smith, please make arrangements to have this manuscript and all subsequent ones from the Grimy Brothers forwarded to Red Kitty’s Publishing. And call 911 again please. I just can’t take all the people dropping dead every time we receive their manuscripts. I don’t think Red Kitty’s people even read the stories they get.”

So that is how Red Kitty’s Publishing became the outlet for Jake and Willy Grimy, better known as The Grimy Brothers. And as a side note, they do in fact read the stories from Jake and Willy. It’s just that they enjoy them so much; no curse has ever befallen any of their staff. Read their stories and enjoy - at your own risk!
