April M. Cox, an Author, and Entrepreneur who has always enjoyed creative writing, rediscovered children's picture books while reading to her grandchildren. Her little Labradoodle often sat with them and was the inspiration for this book series.
She founded Little Labradoodle Publishing in 2018 with a passion to publish beautifully illustrated books that children would love and parents would appreciate. Little Labradoodle books provide underlying themes like gratitude, kindness, friendship, diversity, self-acceptance, and inclusion.
April lives in Pawtucket, Rhode Island with her husband of 30 years and their two Labradoodles. She dedicates her work to her four beautiful grandchildren who have stoked the passion for writing children's books.
Describe your desk
My desk is filled with papers and notes on my long list of to-dos. I have a little Labradoodle plushie sitting by my computer to inspire me with my writing. There is also a sign in view that says "It's never too late to live happily ever after.", a Dr. Seuss quote and a huge canvas of one of my favorite illustrations in Puppy Pickup Day, with the puppies all running together. I love the look of it with its Disney-esque appearance.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Rhode Island, not far from Providence. My parents didn't have much money so we lived in a small attic apartment above my grandparents home. I am the oldest of three daughters and we had my Dad and Mom all living in a four-room apartment. One of my sisters shared a sofa bed with me at night and my baby sister had a room next to my parents. We didn't have much and my family was all factory workers.
When I was thirteen we moved into a mobile home village in Burrillville, RI. I still have a picture of my best friend and me standing outside my mobile home. I never want to forget where I came from. It drove me to be a high performer and to be the first in my family to go to college. I'm sure it resulted in my work ethic and resulting success in a long IT / Business career in Corporate.
When my job in corporate was eliminated, I had a desire to go back to simpler times, remove the large mortgage and debt we had accumulated. We sold our home and purchased... you guessed it - a mobile home in Pawtucket, RI. There I am, back to my roots, with minimal expenses doing my best to make this "author thing" work.
