Biography

I grew up as the son of a small town weekly newspaper editor. With no lack of paper, I 'wrote' from before I could write. But, as life happened, I immersed myself in my growing family and my computer programming career. For 35 years I wrote software for income and fiction/non-fiction for pleasure. Then in 2003, that changed. Now I write software for fun and am "driven" to create stories that will take the reader on fascinating journeys. This transition started about 2001 when Sandy (my wife since 1969) and I went to Nantucket to research family history.

While perusing a database dump on Joseph Macy, I saw the name “Rebecca Ann Johnson” scroll by. Just weeks before, while reading a book on whaling, I had seen her name and considered the seaman's story concerning her to be just a whaler's tale. But here she was…the story verified by a letter from the US consulate in Payta, Peru! In 1849, she survived 8 months dressed as a man serving on the whaling ship the Christopher Mitchell. The profession was difficult for a man, and Ann did it successfully…single handedly saving the ship and the crew by one account. Postponing the family history, I focused on researching Ann’s life. The result—First Fury! The documents, photos, and related web site information are all available on the book’s web site, (www.firstfury.com). Ruined and 'til Her Heart Dances finish the Fury series.

For 40 years, we have attended the Baptist church in Windsor, Colorado, where I have served as deacon, Bible study leader, and in various other positions. While working with youth and adults, I created various age graded Bible studies. In the summer of 2003, our pastor at that time presented a special class on Baptist history. Some of the accounts he shared begged to be told in story form where readers would EXPERIENCE the journeys taken by our forefathers. The result—The Courage of Your Faith! This work consists of 12 short stories and 12 Bible studies, each addressing an issue as relevant today as it was in the past. Each story/study also has supporting documentation, web site links, and a Power Point presentation with notes and photographs. Everything is available at www.COYFaith.com for no charge. I only ask for donations commensurate with the benefit received by the reader.

Star Song is a science fiction novel. The science involves that illusive force that is causing the expansion of the universe. Furthermore, is time really a variable that can change as our frame of reference changes? If Satan and the fallen angels are confined to Earth, what would it be like to leverage that repulsing energy and travel to another star where the "Tempter" could not go. Or, could he?

Today, my wife Sandy and I live in Windsor and, now that I am retired, I spend a lot more of my time in the craft of writing...that is when I am not feeding her flower fetish.

Book 1 of 3. Based on the true story of a woman wronged, First Fury is a quest for vengeance. In 1848, Ann is abandoned by her lover. Then, dressed as a man, anger drives her to sign on to a whaling ship to hunt down the fellow who “ruined” her. This is a different kind of love story. “Blinding vapors of foam and white-fire...the first fury of the whale's headlong rush...” [Moby Dick, page 81]

Smashwords book reviews by Thomas Macy

  • Guardian Awakening on March 29, 2021

I just bought the second book in the set. I usually read the first book in a series because they are free. Seldom do I purchase the next books. This was one of those exceptions. The story is captivating with many possible directions. It hooked me right from the start. And, best of all, it was well written! Two caveats however. I don't like graphic sex scenes. This book had at least one that came close. From my perspective, totally unnecessary to develop the depth of the relationship. Second, the last third of the book could have used an editor. There were a few words used incorrectly as if Word autocorrected for spelling and put in the wrong word. These distracted from the reading. The first part of the book did not seem to have that issue. However, for me, these were minor problems. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Of course, I would probably warn them about the sex scenes.
  • Guardian Generations on April 21, 2021

Guardian Generations is the second book in a series. I read and reviewed the first book Guardian Awakening giving it a 5 star rating. I was looking forward to another great read. And the story line did not disappoint. However, from a technical perspective, this book is a step down. There are numerous incorrect words used as if the word processing tool guessed at and inserted a close but wrong word. The dialog was distracting when more than two characters are involved. An editor could have fixed all these issues. As I noted in the review of Awakening, (for those who find it distracting) there is an obligatory sex scene unnecessary to the development of the story line. All this being said, the story is still captivating. There is just the right mix of resolutions and questions left hanging. I look forward to the third book in the series.

The hook could have been better. It took a while to get into the story; but, once I did, the book was a fun read. To some degree Henck weaves contemporary social issues into the plot. In doing so, the hero moves from one love affair to another until he finds his perfect genetic match. While this is not something I like in science fiction, it is a commentary on where we are as a society. AND Henck does a good job of tying these amorous relationships into the story. Science Fiction gives us the ability to create worlds that tease the senses. Henck does that well. If you like books with subplots delving into the variability of time, this will be a read you will enjoy. The time between the last chapter and epilogue was a disappointment. I would rather have seen some sequels. However, there is still room for a sequel--which I look forward to reading.
