Timothy S. Johnston

Timothy S. Johnston is a lifelong fan of science fiction thrillers in both print and film. His greatest desire is to contribute to the genre which has given him so much over the past four decades. THE FURNACE is a work of passion for him, for the stories that have inspired it are thematically, psychologically, and visually epic. He lives on Planet Earth, but he dreams of the stars.

A Message from Timothy S. Johnston

The novels INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, WHO GOES THERE? (THE THING), and THE PUPPET MASTERS inspired me to begin writing. In addition, I fell in love with Agatha Christie locked-room mysteries such as AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and THE MOUSETRAP at a young age. When I sat down to write a new novel, I know that I wanted to capture the essence of these types of stories and update them into a futuristic Science Fiction thriller.

I have a deep love for Science Fiction. Growing up in the 1970's, I watched many films such as SOYLENT GREEN, SILENT RUNNING, LOGAN'S RUN, THE OMEGA MAN, PLANET OF THE APES, ROLLERBALL, ALIEN, and INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. I discovered writers Asimov, Heinlein, Pohl, del Rey and Card in the 80's and this further cemented my feelings for SF. Throw in a dose of 80's SF movies like THE FLY, THE THING, and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, and you quickly get a feel for the type of story I enjoy.

I hope you like THE FURNACE. It is described as a "Locked-Room SF Mystery," but it also definitely has SF horror elements. There is coarse language and violence as well -- it takes place in a military setting -- so please be warned. But if you enjoy mysteries set in isolated and dangerous locations with a group of paranoid and scared characters, thrills and chills and action, then this is the book for you. It is a futuristic thriller featuring human beings; there are no aliens of any sort in my writing. The story is introduced with a Homicide Investigator sent to solve a murder. He stumbles onto something beyond his experience, and quickly realizes that not only is his situation dire, but the entire fate of the human race is at stake.
