Toby Zara

Biography

I’ve had a long-ish and interesting life, being in my time a teacher, a salesman, a very bad gardener, the man using a theodolite on a civil engineering site and an IT programmer/analyst/consultant, as well as writing under more than one pen name.

I’ve written and sold over twenty radio plays, a TV script, some short stories for women's magazines and various other things.

I don’t go in for ‘deep’ books or films, where motives, emotions and relationships are examined in serious detail page after page. I like action and/or humour in what I read and watch, and when they arrive together it’s great. Having said that, it should come as no surprise my favourite film is ‘The Fifth Element’ (but they should have dumped the bit where the Diva sings. Goes on too long.) I do not have a favourite book, being one of those people who can’t remember not being able to read means I’ve had so many favourite books over the years it’d be unfair to pick one out over all the others.

Because good books live. They become friends and insert themselves into your mind with a determination that is perhaps only matched by great music.

‘Toby Zara’ is the pen name I use for writing fast paced, family friendly action/adventure stories.

The Abigail Saltminder books are the first of these. Abigail is a character I’m particularly fond of, ‘cause she’s tough and resourceful and makes the most of what she’s got! Although she lives in the future, she is a heroine for our times.

I have been asked, ‘Why call her Abigail?’ The answer is simple. Many, many years ago I was in a production of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible.’ The chief protagonist in this play is a girl called Abigail Williams who, in my mother’s phrase, was no better than she ought to be. Anyway, I really, really liked the girl who played Abigail. I’ve now forgotten what her real name was, but ‘Abigail’ has always stuck in my mind.

And ‘Saltminder?’ I wanted something memorable and easy to Google. Right now, if you Google ‘Saltminder’ Abigail’s right up there on page one!

What’s not to like? Enjoy! That’s what books are for.
