Tell us about your latest novel, ‘Wheels Up.’
‘Wheels Up’, is the story of a young bomber pilot and his crew stationed in Great Britain during World War II. It’s a story of danger, intrigue and love. An account of real life as it unfolded during that era. It is due to be released in mid-April.
I grew up in the small community of Grinnell, Iowa, just east of Des Moines. My father was a WWII veteran who had served in the Pacific during the war. Both my uncles and my aunt were also veterans of that war. The stories they told and the pictures they shared of the war years were very captivating. It was a time of honor, loyalty and comradery. I almost feel I was a part of it, just my being a baby boomer.
When I first began to develop the story of ‘Wheels Up’, I turned to a former class mate of mine, who I grew up with in, Grinnell. Although most of my friend’s fathers of that era were veterans of the war, my friend, Rick, had a fascinating story. Both of our fathers had graduated from Grinnell High School as the war broke out. In Ricks case, his mother was a war bride from England. Over the years, we shared stories that were handed down from our families. A lot of what Rick shared with me, helped me develop my main characters.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is when I hear from a reader who asks me how soon my next book is coming out. I love hearing from readers and talking about experiences they have had. Sometimes It will inspire me to sit down and start writing after one of these moments. Such was the case in ‘Wheels Up”.
