After a busy working life travelling and taking on a variety of different careers I went to university as a *very* mature student. There I achieved an MA & BA, and became a lecturer. Along the way I've written quite a bit and at last have found the ideal way to share some of it with you. It ranges from local history and Italian literature to editing and illustrating Ron Black's Lakeland Hunting Memories (see www.lakelandhuntingmemories.com). I've already published some printed books at Blurb.com.
When I'm not sitting at the laptop formatting stuff for eBooks I'm an equestrian artist and web designer and always seeking out a new challenge!
As far as we are aware this will be the first book about Joe Bowman, “Auld Hunty”, legendary huntsman to the Ullswater Foxhounds, since W. G. Skelton. Using newspaper reports and other source material the book attempts to give an insight into Joe Bowman, the life he led and the country he loved. Considered to be second only to the fabled huntsman John Peel, his fame spread worldwide.
This book is another dip into recollections of life in the English Lake District during the ‘50s and ‘60s. Ron Black was born and bred in the English Lake District, like his forefathers, and here relates some of his memories of hunting with hounds, competing in fell races, the heroic exploits of his family members, along with historical accounts written in the 1800s and earlier. 24,000 words.
Most of the songs in this book have been passed down from generation to generation, each an important part of Lakeland oral history. Hence there is no conventional spelling, punctuation or grammar for these written versions, many containing words of dialect. A glossary of terms & dialect words has been added to help with understanding the characters, events & journeys described within the verses.
Rather than provide all the answers to questions asked about the play, this book introduces the different facets and concepts, encouraging and assisting the reader to study the text and investigate further. It culminates with a 3000 word paper exploring the relation between the Actors and Characters.
Recollections of Lakeland hunting in the '50s and '60s. This first volume is an introduction to further, larger volumes which will be compiled from the popular web site Lakeland Hunting Memories established three years ago by Ron Black and Wendy Fraser. Here are some pages that are soon to be archived.
