Smashwords book reviews by Wilde Blue Sky

  • Fast Down on Feb. 16, 2013

A grandfather takes his family (including ten-year old grandson) to a run-down hotel, where he stayed as a boy. Everything in the hotel is old and faulty. The grandfather and grandson work together to try and fix things. But will the family survive the ropey old elevator? This story is enjoyable and has a satisfying twist at the end. If you’ve ever stayed in an old hotel you’ll recognise many of the scenes of faulty appliances / dodgy lifts / etc.
  • Gathering Clouds... on March 08, 2013

The world is going through a dramatic climate change - the clouds and life giving rain have disappeared. Can two young brothers, Trevor and Russell, save the world? The storyline is very well developed and contains many ingenious ideas, but some of the characters didn’t ring true and some of the writing could have been tighter. If you enjoy sci-fi (such as Battlestar Galactica) you’ll enjoy this book.
  • Clouds over Planet X on June 12, 2014

This book resolves around aliens, threats to the human race, space travel and the power of the mind. I enjoyed this book - it has an unusual / original storyline and set of characters. If you enjoy Sci-Fi books (such as those by Philip K. Dick) you’ll probably find this a satisfying read.
  • Orussian Quarantine on March 07, 2015

This sci-fi story about genetic engineering was interesting. About half way through I started to wonder where the “hybrids” would end up and whether the story was in the past or future. My one criticism of this book is that I found the writing very dense, it read like a distillation of a novel into ten thousand words.
  • Darkness Lay Ahead on Sep. 05, 2015

A young woman burden with debts and society’s expectations decides to strike out. A very thought provoking short story which anyone who is “trapped” (through debt / family ties / etc.) in a life they don’t enjoy will recognise.
  • Yoikes on Sep. 08, 2015

Two not very bright security guards get transported back in time and end up in a tournament in 1100s England. The story was quite clever, but an introduction / some scene setting would have helped and more explanation / description of the action / scenes would have been useful.
  • The Lucky Leprechaun - Astro's Adventures on Oct. 23, 2016

A group of dogs, who work for a secret dog protection organisation, are set a challenge. I found this an entertaining short story full of odd situation / characters / ideas – the narrative flowed with a good pace and there were bits of Irish history / folklore sprinkled within the story. The villains were bad, but not too extreme for children, and the heroes all had their odd skills / limitations / quirky characteristics. Worth a look if you want a story read to / with a young child (especially if they are animal lovers) or if you’ve read and enjoyed the rest of the series. I understand that the proceeds from the sales of this book are being given to an animal charity which is always a plus.
