Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your latest book?
In the huge, anarchic city of Kondrastibar, an elderly woman rescues a young girl by purchasing her from a slave market. In the subsequent story, we encounter a troop of amazons, a larcenous monk, a priest of the Church of Irony, a crime lord, a large number of different religions, an aristocratic warrior family, an erring husband, a dealer in antiquities, various experts in magic, a drug-addicted opera singer, a sentient computer, a social activist devoted to non-violence, a race from beneath the earth and another from above the sky, numerous gods, the immensely powerful Lord of Evil, and many others. As we follow their various interlocking paths, we see Kondrastibar undergo a profound transformation.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I felt that I could write well and that I had something to say. I submitted my manuscript to a publisher, who held onto it for about a year and then rejected it. I didn't have great hopes of being published by a company anyway, because my novel, partly because it is a novel of ideas, is not the sort of thing that might be expected to sell widely.
