Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small mining town known as Hwange in Zimbabwe. As part of the past times I used to play house with my friends hence I developed a vivid imagination because of that.
The interest of hearing a good story turned into writing for me as I also wanted to create those beautiful worlds that one heard about. I and a couple of friends wrote some stories in secondary and I guess I never stopped from there.
Writing can be emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?
This is almost two years later after my first book was published, hence I have experienced a lot pertaining to my writing journey. At first I used to think writing wasn't stressful but rather was like therapy to me.
I have had a change of heart, but not completely 'laughs'. There is a time when writing did get stressful for me and I had to learn along the way on how to curb it instead of letting the stress take charge and make me give up. So these are my few tips:
1. Write out of passion.
The ebook industry is a competitive one and they are a lot of good writers out there who appear to be making it while your sells are none existent. It is always good to remind oneself why you started writing in the first place and stay true to that.
2. Set a target
Amidst the busy life, make time to write a page or two daily. I know some good writers whose stories the world is waiting to read about, yet they haven't taken time to pen down those ideas because they are always too busy and then exhausted. I have experienced that too. I have had to make a deliberate decision and commitment to write regardless of how exhausted I might be. It gets easier as time goes on and before you know it, you have adapted and can still balance family life, work life and not stop on the dream of writing.
3. Be true to yourself
Never lose sight of the type of writer that you are. Don't put money first over what you are passionate about. At times it is fine to not fit in a mold but stand apart from the rest. I have received a lot of suggestions over changing my genre, adding a little bit of that, here and there and so on. As much as I want my books to be read at the same time I have to stay true to myself on why I am writing. It can serve me well to take up the advice and suggestions and incorporate it in my books but what am I putting on the line at the end. So think about that and don't write a book to please the reader yet that doesn't please you and make you want to go back to it and pat you back that you wrote it.
4. Never give up.
They are times you might contemplate giving up on writing, times it might seem like its taking most of your time yet producing nothing, you are not earning anything and readers seem uninterested to read even a sample of your book. My advice is that you don't give up. Continue writing because everytime you are writing it is like you are planting a seed. In due season that seed will sprout and produce much.
