This story begins as war stories often do: with a call to arms. Following 9/11, Aaron Roston joined the New York City Teaching Fellows, a program that parachutes "career changers" into schools known as "hard to staff." Using memoir, history, and reportage, Roston weaves a narrative that is a maddening, sometimes tragic, often comic saga of what ensued when the school bell rang.
