Alan North grew up in Halifax, England: he spent much of his youth exploring Yorkshire's moors and dales. He then lived in Aberdeen, Scotland for thirteen years as a medical student, physician, biomedical researcher and mountaineer. He has climbed extensively throughout Scotland, the Alps, Greenland and the Soviet Pamirs. His professional career as a teacher and researcher engaged in the physiology and pharmacology of the nervous system took him, throughout forty years, to residence in the United States (Chicago, Boston and Portland), Switzerland (Geneva), and eventually back to the north of England (Sheffield and Manchester). Alan is now retired and living in Colorado.
