Biography

I was born in 1977, one of the micro-generation of people who experienced an analogue childhood and digital adulthood. Sometimes called Xennials, sometimes ‘The Star Wars Generation’, this duality had a definite impact on how I see the world.

I am Scottish. Technically, I was born in England, in a now dead and disappeared county, but my family moved to the far northern islands of Orkney when I was eight and I grew up there. Scotland remains the closest thing I have to a home nation.

I write for a sort-of-living and travel and live in places where the small amount of money I make from my words goes further. This feeds into my work, new experiences and cultures adding extra flavour and detail. Rather than the oft-derided “Digital Nomad” tag, I prefer the more Snufkinesque “Globally Feral”. It fits. I am not a travel writer, but a writer who travels.

Né en 1977, j’appartiens à la micro-génération de ceux qui ont connu une enfance analogique et une vie d’adulte digitale, parfois appelés les Xennials, parfois la génération Star Wars. Cette dualité a un impact prépondérant sur ma façon d’appréhender le monde.

Je suis Écossais. Techniquement, je suis né en Angleterre, dans un comté aujourd’hui mort et disparu, mais ma famille a déménagé dans les lointaines et nordiques îles Orcades quand j’avais huit ans et c’est là que j’ai grandi. L’Écosse reste pour moi le pays qui s’approche le plus de la nation à laquelle j’appartiens.

L’écriture est mon gagne-pain, et je voyage et m’installe en des lieux où la faible somme que me rapportent mes mots me permet de vivre. Ceci nourrit mon travail, les nouvelles expériences et cultures ajoutant une saveur spéciale et du détail. Plutôt que la souvent moquée étiquette de “Nomade Digital”, je préfère le terme de “Sauvage Mondial“ - traduction du terme anglais “Globally Feral”. Cela me correspond mieux. Je ne suis pas un auteur de voyage, mais un auteur qui voyage.
