This book 'The Twilight Lawns Chronicles' is that very rare thing, a one-off, a totally original idea. It is a delight of often outrageous whimsy and genteel lampooning of the eccentric English gentility who may, or may not, still exist within the confines of the better class of retirement home. The denizens of Twilight Lawns are discovered here in their natural habitat and one feels safe from behind the curtains, as it were, to treasure the bewildered dottiness of their occasional interactions with the modern world whilst admiring Matron's rigorous implementation of the all-important 'code of traditional standards'. It would be a mistake however to assume that all of them are docile until sedated and we are occasionally treated to a show that is red in tooth and claw ... well, claw anyway ... teeth being of a much more mobile nature in the genteelly endangered. I can thoroughly recommend this surprising and very funny book and would advise you to loosen your braces before reading as it allows for much more comfort when laughing. I tip my chapeau to the author on his outstanding creation.
