Annie Hammer

Annie Hammer writes and drinks in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the foggy nights and hipsters in tight jeans inspire her stories. She began the Beerotica series while visiting breweries cross-country. Next year she will come out with a series of post-apocalyptic erotica short stories featuring no zombies whatsoever.
In her spare time, she makes furniture and shops at farmer's markets.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up deep in the midwest, on a very literal farm. We had cows and chickens and horses, not to mention pickup trucks, good old' boys, and motorcycle dudes (and chicks!). I do think this keeps me grounded in reality. I can't imagine myself writing about moviestarlets or fashionistas. Those kinds of books can be fun, I just won't be the one writing them. My characters always feel a bit clunky or "down home". Sometimes, even in the middle of crazy sexy times, they feel a bit out of place. They tend to have the ability to stand back and see the funny side of any situation. I just can't help myself. Those are the women I know and love, the women who raised me, and I want to write characters they can relate to.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is tough for me. I want to represent what the story is about, but I'm so over the headless, 6-pack male torso that plagues erotica. I understand why it is the way it is--there are a lot of restrictions with what we can do with covers, because of models privacy, content/age constraints, and money restraints. I don't have a big budget to get a professional. I also don't feature characters that have 6-packs, hourglass figures, or any kind of "pert" bodyparts! My characters are supposed to look like real people, with lumps and bumps and oddities, and I'd like my covers to reflect that, or at least to not counter that!
