Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
I have a job and a young family, so the only regular writing time I have is early in the morning - at the moment between 05.45 and 06.45. I can push this to about 09.30 on weekends. I do what I can on my days of, but my family comes first. I'd never sacrifice my relationship with my wife and children for my own creative needs. My two published novels, Dark Gardening and The Angela Suite, both took approximately eighteen months to complete. For the latter, I used the National Novel Writing Month (NanoWrimo) 50,000 word challenge as a way of getting my (very) rough first draft down. I plan to do this again this year for my third book. At the moment this novel is at the planning/research stage, not something that I needed to do much of with the first two books. I'd like to write full time, but then, who knows, maybe I wouldn't enjoy it so much. The way things are now, I really value my writing time. It'd be horrible to start to take it for granted.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It wasn't something I read, it was a story that an English teacher called Mr Year told us in class one day when I was probably twelve or thirteen. It was about aliens making a journey to Earth. They were very technically advanced, but it was only when they reached their destination that the reader realised they were basically insects, about the size of ants. Of course, we humans just stepped on them without giving them another thought. I've no idea who wrote the story, or what it's called, or why it's stuck in my memory so long and so much, but it's stayed with me.
I didn't really start reading fiction seriously until I was in my late teens or early twenties. Amongst the first novels I really loved were Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye and Orwell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying. I know the latter is regarded as one of Orwell's lesser works, but I really related to the central character. Probably because I was (and am) perpetually short of money!
