Review of My Soul Cries by Cher Corbin Cher Corbin’s, My Soul Cries, is a five-part poetry collection about loss, redemption and resurrection of faith –the ultimate empowerment. There is triumph and strength in self-discovery. There is a steeling of soul when the speaker regains control of her life. The speaker bares her soul in sections entitled, My Soul Cries for Clarity, My Soul Cries in Anger, My Soul Cries in Hope, My Soul Cries with Desire and My Soul Cries for Love. My Soul Cries begins with challenges. The speaker seeks to overcome deep-seated insecurities (“blow away the nightmare of fear”), despair, and malignant affections. There is a clear need to “unburden herself,” and accept the power of her inner spirit and the hands of those willing to uplift her. Then she tells us that the “unburdening of self,” is not an easy task. “Harsh reality/cuts deep/the core/gnawed by the vampire bitch.” The speaker has been taken advantage of but has learned not to be vengeful. In the end there is hope, a rediscovery of sensuality, a renewal of faith and embracing of light. There is an occasional test of faith but the spirit within is strong enough to withstand “darkness,” in its various guises. It is a great read, a great guide to women who have been to hell and back in relationships and are seeking their place in the world. As Bob Marley said, “get up, stand up, stand up for your rights.” Althea Mark-Romeo, reviewer
