Pawl Schwartz is originally from Louisville, KY. His fiction is weird, disgusting, challenging, and genre-defying. Story topics range from a group of dead mean who compost and move as one being along the forest floor, the limits and source code for ThePhysical.exe, and the methods for properly impregnating an apartment complex. Pawl currently lives in Chicago, IL, and works as a staff writer at urchicago.com.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The act itself. It is like reading for me, except I'm writing a book that I would want to read. I never have more than an idea, phrase, concept, or character to go on when I am writing. If I already know where the story is going to go, I'm too bored to finish the story.
Also, any time that I get to describe a uniquely disgusting or painful situation.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on two novels. The first is a horror-sex-adventure about a boy who has lost his father to outer space, and the boy's father who lives in his thoroughly taped up shack, orbiting the globe and living off of vitamin fortified whiskey.
The second is a magic-realist sci-fi take on the south in which babies are born by fights breaking out, penises have all been replaced with guns, and sex is a pointless act that kills. Also, Oprah makes an appearance.
