Bethany Harvey

I’m a biologist, GIS nerd, occasional firefighter and reluctant cubicle monkey living in North Carolina. I write literary short stories and SFF novels, and hope to someday figure out why it doesn’t work the other way around.

You can often find me yelling about politics and tabletop RPGs on Twitter, or about under-appreciated wildlife at

Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Sure. I was about 4 years old. I wrote it while sitting on the kitchen floor, in green crayon. It was about a cat. I had to ask my mom to spell... well, all of the words other than "cat." She said it was pretty ambitious of me to try to write whole sentences. I didn't know what a sentence was. I was writing a story.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Rural Middle-of-Nowhere, West Virginia. It turned out that such a boring place was strange and exotic to my college classmates in Florida, so for a few years, I set all my stories there and turned any real-life weirdness I could remember up to 11. It got me noticed, and I think the stories were good. But eventually I got tired of being defined by where I was from and started using other settings.
