Unicorn Productions Books

Publisher info

Unicorn Productions was born in the late 1990s to publish the graphic novels and one-shot comics by Barbara G.Tarn.
Those photocopied zines with the unicorn logo are now out of print, so the dozen lucky readers who have them might one day get rich.
Now the imprint is alive again thanks to new technology. It's slowly expanding to other genres...
Barbara G.Tarn writes fantasy and some sci-fi, contemporary fiction including M/M romance and historical fantasy.
Barbara Sangiorgio is for the stories set in Italy that would get lost in translation and were written in the past century.

Smashwords Interview

Why do I get a unicorn instead of an author picture on this page?
Because that's the logo I used on my photocopied zines back in the 1990s - and still is on the POD version of my books. E-books don't have rooms for logos, so there you have it! :)
It's now also on the publisher's page at http://www.unicornproductionsbooks.com/
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I hate legalese and contracts. And I'm a control freak. And I'm too prolific for traditional publishing. And I write unconventional stuff with unconventional voice, so... indie a go go! :)

I'm very happy to be able to go out there and find my readers. I have a niche that traditional publishers won't cover. So, if you're an adult who still loves fantasy and sci-fi and other wondrous stories, check me out! :) Someone once told me I reminded her of George R.R. Martin, but since I haven't started on Game of Thrones yet, I have no idea. I haven't read Tolkien, so you won't find any of that for sure! :) No quests and no coming of age, but the rest... anything goes! Character-oriented and probably shorter than what traditional publishers want, but I believe the story has the length it has and I'm sick of pumping up wordcount to meed "industry standards"!

Smashwords book reviews by Unicorn Productions Books

  • The Black God's War: A Novella Introducing a New Epic Fantasy on Sep. 11, 2010

A good taste of a bigger tale for all epic fantasy lovers out there.
  • Twenty-Somewhere on Dec. 12, 2010

I've long forgotten my 20s and I'm Italian (therefore with a different educational background, even from England), but I really enjoyed this story. It's witty, funny and dramatic at the same time. The characters are very real to me, even if I'm a foreigner and could be their mum. I look forward to read more about Sophie, Claudia and MJ!
  • 101 Tips for Traveling with a Vampire on Feb. 22, 2011

Very funny and highly entertaining, with some real travel tips thrown in - will have to keep this until the day I meet Louis de Pointe du Lac (Hollywood version, please)! Great job - must check the novels and will ASAP!
  • Wandering Koala Meets the Beast Who Came for Christmas 1 of 3 on May 21, 2011

cool comic (an special thanks to the author for the article on "I love Smashwords")
  • Wandering Koala Rides the Phantom Coach Comic 1 on May 21, 2011

I like the mute protagonist! :-)
  • The Bones of the Sea on May 23, 2011

A very captivating sci-fi tale on how humans tend to destroy everything in their wake. If you had to face the protagonist's situation, what would YOU do?
  • Shades of Gray on June 23, 2011

OK, first of all, I'm not a fan of vampires and I'm stuck to Ann Rice's first 3 books (and I prefer the movie of Interview anyway, but I read also the Vampire Lestat and Queen of Darkness, then I had enough of the gore and quit). BUT Katelina's "voice" is so strong and funny (and in third person, yay!) that I really rushed through this. The right amount of gore, sex and humor, so to speak. And I look forward to start the second book of the series and all the short stories I skipped so far.
  • Legacy of Ghosts on July 21, 2011

it's good to be back in this world, even if Katelina is sometimes annoyingly stupid... but then, no conflict/wrong choices/stupid reactions, no story, right? Looking forward to the third book...
  • Cigs, Bolan & Strange Men with Guns on Aug. 09, 2011

a fast and entertaining read. Looking forward to more!
  • Alien Abduction on Sep. 19, 2011

5 star story with 3 star execution. Lots of head hopping and omniscient narrator (which isn't necessarily bad, but needs some getting used to), and lots of indirect speech. The story is told more than shown and sometimes the repetitions slow down the action. I have very mixed feelings about this, I admit it! I liked the story, but those huge blocks of text made it for a slow read... do I want more? Maybe. Yeah, I guess I want to know what's next. But I'm not in a rush.
  • Ties of Blood on Sep. 25, 2011

It's good to be back in this world. It's bad it's not the last book and the happily ever after seems so far away. I KNOW the next thing on Jorick and Katelina's schedule won't go as smoothly as they plan! And I'll have to wait until next year? Yikes! That's torturing your readers! Anyway, another dose of fun AND gore with the right amount of sex and action was very welcome... Did I mention that Jorick has become my favorite vampire? And I have mixed feelings about the newcomer, red-headed Verchiel... much like Katelina!
  • The 4 Types of Artists – Starving, Dying, Dead, and Rich! on Sep. 26, 2011

Absolutely love the Mighty Caricaturist - and if she feels like Hulk, I'll kindly remind her she's more like a She-Hulk (i.e. she has a brain)! Way to go, Shafali! We want more!
  • The 5 P's of Creativity on Sep. 26, 2011

Can't stick to those even if I'm "part-time" artist, but it's lovely... Will be waiting for more Shafali fun!
  • Coming Home (Dicky's Story) on Oct. 06, 2011

A very funny and inspirational story. I usually don't like first person narration, but this was another exception - the witty (male) protagonist captured me from the very beginning and I couldn't let the book down. Having Jewish friends and in spite of being very bad at maths, I figured out it's set in the 23rd century - but it's a very different century from Star Trek! ;-) A post-apocalyptic Earth and those Black Coats that reminded me of A stranger among us - underground. I recommend it to anyone who wants an uplifting love-story, regardless of his/her religion. Oh, but it's a sci-fi romance, so no hardcore sci-fi fans! ;-)
  • The Glendale Witch on Oct. 29, 2011

I'm not really in the target audience for this book, but it is well written and fast paced and with some underlying humor (unless it's the cynical adult me who saw it). Recommended for all YA readers, but mostly girls. Ever wanted to be a witch? This is the book for ya!
  • The Other Slipper on Feb. 20, 2012

A Cinderella spinoff or at least another take on the glass slippers story. A funny and entertaining mission where not everything is as expected - quite the opposite! For fairy tales and fantasy lovers of all ages.
  • In My Shoes on March 18, 2012

I won this book in a giveaway, which means I might have not put it on my TBR list, but I enjoyed it nevertheless - in spite of not being the target audience. It's a fun read, the only critique I have is the use of first person but from two characters point of view, which sometimes makes it hard to understand who's talking until a few paragraphs in the chapter as both characters sound the same. It's a great body swap story, though, and I'm glad I had the chance to read it!
  • Two People Having Sex (An Erotic Parody) on March 27, 2012

It’s brilliant and funny! It’s also very short, so really, give it a shot – I love parodies when they’re well done!
  • The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success on May 05, 2012

A must for all indie authors - even those who are already aware of those "secrets". There's no one way for everyone, but it all starts with one Great Book. And another. And another. Fair companion to the Marketing Guide by the same author.
  • Wrath, Prequel to Tredan's Bane on July 12, 2012

a good world building setting up for the novel. Interesting views of magic - should try the novel sometime in the future. Short but good!
  • Lipstick Tales on Nov. 07, 2012

Quick and sweet reads for romantic moods... Hoping to see longer works from this author soon!
  • Ashes of Deceit on Jan. 24, 2013

Another instalment in my favorite vampire series - and I'm not a vampire fan, in case you're wondering. My first and last vampires books were the first 3 Ann Rice's books in the late 1990s and I was so NOT impressed that I quit after Queen of the Damned and thought I'd never read another vampire book after those 3. Then comes the new millennium, blogging and Joleene Naylor. Now I'll have to wait for book 5, gah! Anyway, I still love her humor, her perfect balance of adult themes and gore, and her crazy characters who often take over her blog, so you better follow that as well. Sometimes I feel sorry for Katelina and Jorick - will they ever be free? ;) And what is really going on in Verchiel's head? Only the author will tell...
  • Fiction River: Unnatural Worlds on May 01, 2013

Okay, can't give the half-star here, but it's 3 and a half if I do the maths. This anthology was a great read. Glad Dean Wesley Smith and Kris Rusch went back to editing and publishing! 5 stars to: "The grasshopper and my Aunts", "Here, Kitty Kitty", Shadow side. 4 stars to: "Life between dreams", "That lost riddle", "Barbarians". 3 stars to: "Finally family", "Sisters", "Dog Boy Remembers". 2 stars to: "True Calling", "A taste of joie de vivre", "The witch's house" If you like short stories, don't miss it! :)
  • Oglers Inc. - 6 Stages of Ogling on May 18, 2013

This is a verbal caricature as funny as the others. Especially for us women, used to those oglers throughout our lives. She nailed it again! Yay for the Caricaturist!
  • Wyrd Worlds on Sep. 12, 2013

I'm in the anthology, so I didn't count my own story. I divided the star rating by 13 stories. My favorites are (in no particular order - or better in the order I read them in the anthology) The blue fial Explain that to a martian The Imaginary Invasion Monday Imps Mesrin Station
  • The Italian School for Assassins on May 06, 2014

Just couldn't put it down. Loved the witty humor, the action and the romance. Highly recommended.
  • Jinx And The Faerie Dragons on Aug. 23, 2014

old or young, if you believe in faeries, check this out. Faeries are cute, but faery dragons are even cuter! And the story was the right length for my tastes (I don't like short short stories). Here's to more on faeries and faery dragons!
  • Bluebell The Fairy Guide on Aug. 25, 2014

a short, lovely fairy tale with a blind girl... because faeries love children, and I do believe in them even if I'm a grownup!
  • The Great Tadpole Rescue on Aug. 25, 2014

a lovely story of saving tadpoles with lots of faeries
  • Goodies For Grandmother on Aug. 25, 2014

a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a brownie instead of the wolf!
  • Thistle The Fairy Trickster on Aug. 25, 2014

Cry wolf with faeries... what else can you ask for?
  • Wyrd Worlds II on Sep. 27, 2014

Since I'm one of the participating authors, I rated the single stories, summed the stars I gave and divided them by 18 (didn't count my own story, of course) to have an overall rating. My five stars stories are: Humanity was delicious My last day Rock of Ages Quest for the purple pumkin At the bottom of the lake Changing everything All very different ranging from humor to drama, children to adult. Well done, fellow Wyrd Worlders!
  • Strange Portals - Ink Slingers' Fantasy/Horror Anthology on Dec. 15, 2014

I have two stories in this anthology, so I didn't count them. I rated the single stories and half of them are five stars! :) The other half takes down the count, and that's why the whole anthology has only 4... Great job, fellow inkslingers!
  • When the Lights Go Out - Ink Slingers' Halloween Anthology on Oct. 08, 2015

I gave star ratings to each story, then divided the total by 24 (excluding my story, of course). The favorite stories are: Midnight Summons, Loving Reflections, The Blue Die, Behind the Door, Legends and Lies, Reapers, Beldren and Through the Willow Tree! Way to go, fellow authors!
  • Fangs & Fun on Sep. 22, 2016

quick, short and fun. I might not be familiar with Mr. Harvey's work, but I'm a fan of Miss Naylor and it was great seeing her vampires guest-star in this book!
  • Eadweard - A Story Of 1066 on Nov. 01, 2016

a good retelling of the battle from the point of view of a young, very young Saxon soldier at his first battle.
  • The Battles Of Hastings on Nov. 02, 2016

a time travel and alternative version of the well-known battle - maybe with a twist? An entertaining and funny adventure of Catastrophe Jane!
  • They Marvel at the Star on Nov. 10, 2016

An interesting retelling of the Battle.
  • Dead Money on Nov. 27, 2016

    a great poker thriller
  • Zeena And The Dryad on Dec. 01, 2018

a lovely fairy tale for adults and children alike.
  • Zeena And The Gryphon on Dec. 04, 2018

And the saga for adults and children continues... Remember your spirit and never forget the Spirit Faery ever again!
  • Zeena And The Mermaid on Dec. 04, 2018

The saga continues. Mermaids, sharks and faery dragons, what's not to love?
  • Zeena And The Phoenix on Dec. 06, 2018

and the saga ends with a bang. I'll miss these characters!
  • Voyage Of The Crimson Sail on Nov. 12, 2019

a quick and entertaining read with the villain rightly punished! :)
  • Facing the Mirror (Guardians of the Pattern, Book 0) on Nov. 13, 2019

short and disturbing view inside a new universe. I should probably check the rest!
  • Jelena on Dec. 20, 2021

A bittersweet story for people who still believe in the magic of nature
