Barbara Lindsley Galloway

Born in Tennessee; raised in Albuquerque, NMX; now live in Texas.

Read every sci-fi book in my junior high and high school libraries (Asimov, Clark, Heinlein), where I elected to spend and work an hour every school day. Also, allegorical fantasy has had a huge influence on my writing. Love J.R.R. Tolkien.

Wanted to write stories since I was a child. Was very shy and spent more time watching people than participating in activities. This has served me well in creating 3-dimensional characters.

As an adult, I have enjoyed the works of Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens, William Faulkner and Earnest Hemingway, to name a few authors of classical works.

Love how times have come around to open doors for independent writers. Everyone should have the opportunity to have their voice heard.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I made up verbal stories when I was a child at play, but was a teenager when I began to take the idea of writing seriously. As a young married woman I would write children's stories and send them out to magazines and be horribly disappointed when they were rejected. In truth, my writing was not well-thought out. I would write something and go back to read it, but it was like chewing concrete! I noticed that the more I wrote, the better I got, but was hard-pressed to actually finish anything. So, I decided to focus on science fiction short stories with the aim of completing them. Once that was successful, I then turned to writing novels. I figured, if I could finish short stories, that was somewhat like finishing chapters and enough chapters would make a book.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
As a child, something about skunks hiding away. It was actually a song. As an adult, it was a sci-fi about a colony on a new world. A plague has killed most of the colonists and the only ones left are old people.
