J.A. Brimingham

Biography

I'm just a Chicago boy at heart; born and raised in and around the Windy City, although now I call South Mississippi home. I've spent most of my life as a musician, playing guitar in various heavy metal bands and I've even released several studio albums. I got into writing thanks to a twist of fate (I've always been the creative type), discovering that I not only had a knack for writing, but also that I loved doing it. I've been seriously pursuing that passion for several years now. I try to create stories based around deep and believable characters, focusing more on how those characters deal with certain situations and conflicts, rather than the actual conflict, itself. My main claim to fame is science fiction and fantasy, although I've been known to dabble in other genres as well.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in earnest in 2010. It was an odd sort of situation that got me into writing. I was playing a game for a long time and the ending turned out to be horrible. I decided that I could have done a way better job and wrote my own ending. I showed what I had done to several people and they all really enjoyed it. They suggested that I should take up writing as a hobby since I seemed to have a knack for prose. So I did.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Wow, that's a lot more complicated question than it appears to be. The idea for 'Dylan's Prize' came about from several places, most notably a short story I conceived about a guy who wins a ship in a lottery. The idea sort of blossomed from there.

I like to examine the 'human factor' when it comes to the characters in my stories. Nobody is perfect and we all have our demons. Human nature is hard to get away from, after all. I sort of wanted to explore those aspects in detail and Dylan's Prize allowed me to do that. It's more about Dylan's growth as a person than it is anything else.
