David Bergsland

As a hippie in the late 1960s, and a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a BFA in Printmaking, he wears the title of Jesus Freak proudly. David has been an artist and designer since 1967 (as far as he can recall that far in the distant past).
He actually started his design career working for an occult publisher in St. Paul. He spent several wasted years as an ego-maniacal heathen fine artist until he found his true calling as a creative called by God to produce beauty for the kingdom.
That has not been a straight or easy path. Through the years he has tried many media, produced thousands of pieces (most that were pure trash) and taught hundreds of students practical graphic design & digital publishing in 2-year colleges.
In recent years he has pulled out of the public arena entirely. Though not a hermit, he is certainly a recluse, living in a small 2-story, brick home that is over a hundred twenty five years old on a tree-lined street in Mankato, Minnesota. Mainly he writes now, of his experiences and beliefs. Increasingly, he writes fiction.

This is a marvelous book is you are looking for a heavily referenced magnum opus work on America's religion: secular humanism. The historical passages are excellent. The quotes and references are amazing. This is one book you really need to have if you are dealing with the c=school system, the political system, or any of the other organizations involved in proselytizing our children and society. It's long and intense, but very good. The title is unfortunate. It's one of those intellectually thought out titles that not only doesn't roll off the tongue, but even now that I've read the book, I'm not sure what it means. BUT it's east to find because spell checkers always have the word ready for you to use after correction.
  • Surviving the Apocalypse in Steinbach, MB on Feb. 05, 2014

There be zombies, in a Christian thriller. This is a Christian book, so I assumed it was about the "real" apocalypse coming soon. It's not. But it's a good story...a post calamity survival tale of realistic young love dealing with life & death issues of survival in a Canadian winter just south of Winnipeg. Yes, there are zombies. It's for younger readers, but I enjoyed it at thrice the age or more.

OK! Before I get jumped by everyone who loves this book, let me remind you of the focus of this book. My purpose is to review the level of Christian content. An imagination & world building tour de force This is a unique world with a lot of excitement, danger, heroes, heroines, villains, and all the rest. Oh yes, & magic! Lots of magic. Ms. Carroll has made this world come alive with great characters and all the rest of a polished story—very well done. So, what’s my problem? It’s yet another Godless universe [multiverse in this case] The world of the book is amazingly complex and multi-layered. But, it’s Godless. The hero is yet another of those reluctant saviors who are forced by circumstances to save the world—even though they have no idea how to do so. This book doesn’t even have the usual supernatural leading of God’s Spirit to show him and him and her and her how to save the world. They just figure it out, pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, and save the multiverse. Bah! Humbug! It’s a sad commentary on our culture today that this type of story is told by believers as well as the heathen. Actually, the heathen books are usually more religious than the Christian ones. It makes me want to cry.
  • The Kingdom on Dec. 30, 2014

High fantasy on an epic scale: a wondrous tale with serious content Unlike Guy’s previous books, this is not another speculative fiction, action/adventure, fantasy, romance romp as part of a series. It is much larger in scope. It’s a standalone high fantasy novel containing culminating battles of an entire world. Guy says his inspiration was El Cid. I don’t know about that as I have never seen the movie. Ayenathurim is a built world from Guy’s fertile imagination which enables Guy to tell the entire story of God’s dealings with mankind as an epic fantasy. Of course, it is fiction. As such, it will undoubtedly drive doctrinal purists nuts. So what? It’s not Earth as we know it, but the spiritual realities ring true. If you love fantasy, you’ll love this book. The spiritual warfare involved has that touch of truth I recognize as a believer of forty years who has worked in deliverance. For the non-believer, it is simply exciting action/adventure. It’s an uplifting book as is normal for Guy. A seemingly normal young man, a bastard product of rape, is driven away from his home. He meets a man who transforms his life. He becomes a wonderful warrior for good in the world. He defeats demons, legendary beasts, and eventually leads a huge army bringing good to a world that is really not interested. He finds and marries a good woman with whom he shares a powerfully uplifting marriage as he wages the wars he’s called to fight. This is epic fantasy that will stir your soul.
