Smashwords Interview

What is your writing process?
Most of my best writing is done by my subconscious mind, with little (if any) input from me. Plus, that's the easiest -- I barely have to do any work!

My college writing teach once commented on my homework that I obviously wrote meticulous outlines and drafts and such. To which I had to truthfully say, well, no. I wrote the homework on the bus ride in, the morning it was due, then copied it over (making a few tweaks) just before class started.
Well, she hedged, do you think about the assignment during the week? Which, yes I did! Then she declared I outlined and edited in my head. And I can't argue with that.

Characters live inside my head (and occasionally annoy me when I'm trying to pick out books at the library or watch a movie on Netflix), interact with each other, and their scenes play out in my head whenever my brain has some downtime. By the time I get to writing the scene in question, it's been redone and polished several times already.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Unique Child is a semi-apocryphal autobiographical fable, so... it's the story of my childhood.

But the story didn't originate like that, it actually came from one of my other characters, Sabrina, from my dance movie. I haven't actually written the movie yet (it lives in my head), but there's a scene where the three main characters are sitting at a boardwalk cafe and discussing their childhood woes with conformity.

Bryan tells how the little kids used to call him 'tutu princess' because he liked to dance, and that's when he became self-conscious about it and stopped. David got grief in high school for not being stereotypical enough, and every day was torture for him.
Then Bri tells the story of how she went to the first day of school, got teased and pressured to conform, and thence f-bombed the other children and went on her own way of defiant non-conformity.

From her few sentences, the fable grew. I found it compelling and even empowering. I kept meeting people who needed to hear that message. So I realized I should share my experience and words of wisdom with the world at large (although without the f-bombing in the children's version!).
