In the last year I have come to believe that the world needs more pleasant stories. This short story by Danielle de Valera is indeed a pleasant one, with good characterization, an interesting plot and a nice feel. The reader is left in no doubt that the main protagonist- Lawson’s intentions are highly honourable, if slightly selfish and self-serving. The story’s simplicity belies the power it has to touch the reader’s humanistic instincts and lead them to hope that all will end well for Lawson, and his cats.

Danielle de Valera's stories are impressive, with an interesting array of characters who are all seriously flawed in one way or another. 'Star' draws my empathy, though not sympathy.

The impressive author, Danielle de Valera, provides a trio of stories concerning relationships. The work is confronting, though expertly conceived and delivered. All of the characters are seriously flawed in way or another; their unions seem almost incestuous in their sheer craziness, and the way their relationships unravel is frightening. Well worth reading!

Great story! Of the stories I have read so far by this author this is my favourite. It held my attention the whole way through. The parallel tale with the main protagonist fighting in Vietnam is a great touch.
