Smashwords Interview

The Steve Cannon series take place in Las Vegas in the 1960's. How familiar are you with that era?
Very familiar as it turns out. I moved there when I was twelve years old in the summer of 1964. I lived there until the summer of 1971, so in effect, I came of age during the period covered by the novels.
What made you decide to write the Steve Cannon series?
I like detective stories and I also like ones that have a definite sense of place. I was reading a novel that was one of a series that took place in Paris, which is a city I am fond of, so it was natural that I would be attracted to it. However, I found it rather unreadable, at least for my sensibilities. I mentioned this to my wife, who simply said: Why don't you write a better one? I thought about it for several days and Steve Cannon as a private detective in the golden age of Las Vegas just seemed to fall into place.
