What inspires you to write?
My initial urge to write originated from disappointment when my art work is exhibited with inappropriate interpretations. My classical landscape paintings generally defy misrepresentation but my experimental works are vulnerable to distorted reviews from critics and gallery managers. The present vogue of leaving works to ‘speak for themselves' is unsuitable for avant-garde works that benefit from some explanatory notes. With the encouragement of my comrade Nedyalka Kovacheva, who is now part of the Upheaval Books logo, my endeavour to explain artwork developed into unexpected fables and plays enhanced by illustrations.
Why do you use images of politicians throughout the ‘Pills for the Hospital Ward’ series?
Aren’t I naughty? I began with celebrities but soon realised there were copyright issues. Administrators holding public office are easy bait to bully and parody. Bureaucrats have no right to appeal because political satire is a protected privilege – for now at least.
