When did you first start writing?
I started writing in 2005. My first novel took almost seven years to finish. It was a learning experience since it had been over thity years since I'd been in college. After college all my writing had been legal writing--briefs, etc.--which would put a normal person to sleep. So I had to learn plotting, characterization, and all the other nuts and bolts of writing a novel. My first draft was about twenty five thousand words. I showed it to a friend and he said it was a nice outline! About three years into the project I threw out half of what I'd written and expanded what was left. While I was revising the first book I started the second book. This turned out to be a great idea as I was able to let the first one sit for a while and let my subconscious cook it. I'm now hard at the third book in the series. The mechanics are much easier and I can concentrate on storytelling.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I started writing because I really enjoy crime novels and mysteries. When I got fed up with rejection letters a friend suggested the indie route. I connected with a great publisher and never looked back.
