In a patriarchal culture rich with tradition and belief, the outlawed dowry still plagues India. Despite its ban in 1961, many husbands and their families still cling to the idea that a woman is not enough to make a marriage. The bride’s family should be made poorer by her marriage, and the groom’s family should prosper. A woman’s worth is solely the fortune she can bring to her new family.
