Charles Egbert was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1932. In 1947, he and his mother spent the summer in Nuremberg with his father, Lawrence D. Egbert, who was serving as the Editor of the Record of the Nuremberg Trials. Sitting in the courtroom and hearing his father talk about the Nazis, the Holocaust and the concentration camps made a lasting impression on him.
When he visited Auschwitz as an adult, he was overwhelmed by the disparity between the lives of the camp prisoners and the lives of the camp commander and his family in their home on the other side of the barbed wire fence.
Mr. Egbert lives in Vermont with his wife, Carol Egbert.
