Smashwords book reviews by Christina Harlin

  • The Orb Chronicles: The Winds of Change on Aug. 10, 2019

Alex Robins is a fairly good writer who has a fun idea here - a difficult near-future world where strangely specific superpowers are randomly distributed. Three friends with powers join the rebels, lots of fighting ensues. This setup would be great as an anime. It will be interesting to see what he does next.
  • Insurrection on Aug. 10, 2019

I found this book to be absolutely hilarious, and though sci-fi spoofing may have not been Mr. Benge's intention (he's a dry and cagey writer), I had a blast reading it.
  • Into the Other on Aug. 10, 2019

I love stories based loosely on fairy tales, and in this one, Rumpestiltskin comes to modern times in the form of Calder, a man who barters with a young woman for her first born child.
  • The Tri-Rep on Aug. 10, 2019

Mr. French's writing is unpracticed and unedited. That must be said. On the other hand, if you ignore the mistakes and let the story lead you down its strange dark road, you'll find some shocking revelations. How you cope with them is up to you. I had to think, analyze, and discuss with a friend. You can't say that about just any old book.
  • The Sigil of Saturn on Aug. 10, 2019

This brief tale of a young woman with the ability to slide between dimensions and, unexpectedly to her, a new power of mind-reading, has a lot going for it. A great setting, beautiful descriptions of locations, particularly New Orleans, and a completely shameless sense of New-Age wonder. I'd only complain that the story is extremely compacted, one event bouncing off the next, as if we're hearing a jittery friend tell us about this weird movie she saw last night and only hitting the high points. Slow down, there, Ms. Desmond - we'd like to hear more!
  • Children of Legend on Aug. 10, 2019

Mr. Brooks has an interesting idea here in taking the heroes of his other books and showing us their childhoods. Therefore this is not so much a story as a "backstory" but if you like his other books, it will probably interest you.
  • Revenge on Aug. 10, 2019

An intriguing idea of people getting "second chances" at life thanks to a mysterious afterlife department that allows one to make a choice on whether to return or move on. The story is somewhat rushed and disorganized, but it may settle into a better rhythm in the sequels.
  • Swords and Sorcery on Aug. 26, 2019

This is a fairly standard fantasy adventure, but it is written with some flair, and populated with likable characters.
