Smashwords Interview

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I collected pictures I'd drawn and stuck them together on a big board and made my parents and baby sister sit down and listen to the story as I narrated. I was probably about 4.
What's the story behind your latest book?
We were living in Jhubei, a town in Taiwan. The year before we moved to this Asian urban metropolis we had been living on a remote African farm - no TV, no cellphone signal. It was such a stark juxtaposition of nature and humans, it gave me a lot to think about in terms of what civilization is, how many elements of modern society exist to control us tacitly rather than the explicit control of the past, and our place in nature. The character of Mariella, a girl with special powers, who does not find any way to fit into a coercive community, seemed to follow me, almost like an angel guide. She walked with me for a year or two before I wrote the book, and it felt to me as if the story was giving her an entrance to the world, an idea which was given to me by a psychic.
