Colin Dunbar

Biography

Colin Dunbar has worked in the technical writing field for more than 35 years, and he's an indie author with 5 (#6 available soon) self-published books to his name, and more to come. After following the regular career path, Colin started his own corporation and ran it for five years - then he decided to sell it.

In 1990/91 he wrote the draft of his first book, Profile of the Technical Writing Profession which he tried publishing through the traditional route. According to the literary agent, there was no demand for this type of book in South Africa. He scrapped the idea to publish it.

Then in 2004, he self-published my book, Invest In Yourself, and in the same year he started a part-time online business, and self-published his book, Get What You Want (ebook sold from his website).

As his experience on the web grew, in 2007 he accepted a virtual contractor position with a Canadian-based company.

For the years 2007 to 2014, Colin offered an e-cover design service. And, also, from 2009 to 2014, he offered a book design service.

In 2011 he launched a self-publishing service website, but in 2014, due to time constraints he closed it to focus all his attention on his own writing.

He started the blogged book, Format Book In Word in 2013, and will be self-publishing the book later this year. This is the first in a series of four books.

"I'm based in South Africa, and married to a wonderful supportive woman (and my biggest critic)." Colin says.

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
To be honest, I can say indie authorship chose me. It was almost a natural progression as I've been in technical writing for 35+ years. In my career, although in a corporate environment, I've been self-publishing for over 3 decades. Agreeably, I did not have the need to sell the manuals, guides, and reports to the public, but the process was very similar.

It was a natural fit for me to follow the indie author path, especially since I have a passion for non-fiction. I had given the traditional publishing a shot once, with no luck.

I also enjoy the freedom and control of self-publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That stems from something that started when I was a kid of about 11. My folks gave me the encyclopedia Britannica, and I spent hours creating documents from a variety of subjects.

It's from there that my curiosity developed, and my love of learning new things.

It's going on a road of discovery - researching, and then sharing what I learned - that is my greatest joy of writing. And the actual design and formatting of my books I enjoy tremendously.
