When I read Antares Dawn and Antares Passage years ago, I enjoyed them a lot, and I longed for the conclusion of the story. When I saw this book here on Smashwords, I was overjoyed!
Unfortunately, this is not the book I was waiting for. The space battles are poorly done, the writing is not nearly as good as the first books, and there were significant chunks where I just gritted my teeth and plowed through.
I'm still glad to have read it, I guess. But I was disappointed.
Compared to a lot of books out there, it's not bad, I had just hoped for something as good as the first two.
This was a fun little read. Not precisely steam punk, necessarily.
I wouldn't mind seeing more in this universe. Slightly stilted characters - but that's appropriate for this sort of 'Boys Own' piece (well, Girls Own, had there ever been such a thing).
Great romp. Great fun. Looking forward to further adventures.
And thank you that the 'love interest' subplot is so understated - very appropriate for that sort of book, and I am SO tired of porn that masquerades as 'fantasy'.
Mind, I used to greatly enjoy Dad's Boys' Own annuals that Grandma and Grampa kept in their cottage at the lake. (Which no doubt dates ME).
