Deborah Ann Dykeman

Biography

Once Upon a Time...there was this crazy woman that wanted to share her life with others. That is what my five children would say. In reality I'm persistent, a little O.C.D., (not diagnosed, but what my family would tell people about me), stubborn and probably bossy. I don't really prefer that last moniker, but I do think that my way is usually the best way! Cuddly, loving and patient, probably not the best adjectives in my description, but God is still working on me! I've been married for thirty-two years. The wrinkled, gray-haired people that need to lose a few pounds are not the same people that wed all those years ago. I don't know when they arrived. But they produced five wonderful children. Three daughters are married to equally wonderful young men, our son is waiting for that special girl and our youngest is still at home. She will be the one to care for us in our old age. Having your last baby at forty sets you up for cutting up your child's meat while receiving the senior discount. Our fifth grandchild has arrived and we are looking forward to many more. I've been a pastor's wife, an AWANA director, and played piano for church. I now work part-time at our local Assisted Living as a C.N.A. For a brief, but fun couple of years our children and I had a Bluegrass/Gospel group. We really enjoyed playing and singing around our little town. We have moved many times over the years, giving me lots of opportunities to fix-up, inside and out. But my renovating and concrete laying days are over, (until the next project!) and I'm very excited to be writing books. I now have five books in print with five more in the works. I am very thankful for Smashwords getting me started on my publishing journey! It's been great! I don't have all the answers, but I promise to be open and real. No candy-coating here! Thank you for reading this far. You receive a gold star! ;)

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Colorado for the most part. When I turned thirteen, my family moved to Vermont and then upstate New York before heading to Arizona for a short time. We then returned to the Hudson Valley area of New York. I think living in these different states with their diverse cultures and climates formed and certainly influenced my writing. I had many great experiences and met different people in each of these states.
When did you first start writing?
I was always writing poetry and little, short stories when I was a child. At seventeen, I wrote a longer story on an old Royal typewriter. It took a lot of finger power to get it pounded out, but I kept at it. I kept the characters from that first story and then wrote my first full-length book about Jonathan and Elisabeth in a different setting. I wrote that on a typewriter as well, but at least it was electric! I went through a lot of ribbon and white-out!
