I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up there and in Jacksonville, Florida, and Dover, Delaware. I graduated from the University of Delaware, and attended graduate school at the University of Chicago before obtaining my doctoral degree at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
I began my private practice in 1993, and have also performed psychological evaluations on children in foster care, conducted disability evaluations, counseled nursing home residents, and treated active-duty military.
I am married, with one adult daughter. I live and work in Tampa, Florida, where I maintain a private practice.

Most self-help or personal growth books help people “cope” better with one specific problem that troubles them. This book offers healing for a wounded core by providing specific guidance to those with the central issues of perfectionism and shame, regardless of which issues or diagnoses are on the surface. It includes many examples and clinical vignettes drawn from the author's experience.
