Smashwords book reviews by Donna Hawk

  • Valley of Sorrows on May 13, 2012

It is quite an awesome read. You have such a wonderful way with words that draw in your reader. It doesn't read like someone's first book and I'm very impressed. I especially loved the way the readers are drawn into the story; before you know it, you're on the edge of your seat trying to help the character figure out what's happened. Excellent job!!
  • Zoo on April 21, 2013

This awesome book deserves 10 stars! This is truly one of the best YA books I've ever read. Emma is a headstrong, independent girl who died in a car crash. But before she actually dies, she is taken by the future and put in a human zoo. She hates it there and tries to escape, who wouldn't? She is brave, snarky, sarcastic, but her heart is good while she is trying to escape the zoo and not live like an animal on display. This book is fast-paced and I absolutely could not put it down. The story is riveting and there are NO GOOD STOPPING PLACES so of course, I had to read until I got done. It is so full of action and surprises and a wonderful combination of good and evil. I love the ending and feel so good about the fate of the characters. There is such an "Ah-ha" moment at the end that I had to read it twice just to feel it again. I will and have recommended this book to everyone. I hope this is only the beginning of Tara Elizabeth's writing career because I'll be looking for everything from her I can get my hands on!
  • Exalted (Exalted Trilogy: Book 1) on April 24, 2013

Tara Elizabeth wrote another wonderful story! Exalted is a dystopian tale of Mena who lives in a world run entirely by the government. All of her life, she has been given a drug that makes the citizens incapable of feeling and showing emotion. She lives in a "gray" world until she consciously stops taking the drug. Suddenly, she feels the emotions that have always been denied such as love and anger. Her loyalties are tested and she has to pretend to be the person they expect her to be. Ms. Elizabeth does a wonderful job of letting her readers know what it would be like to live in such a controlled society. I know this must be the first book of a series because of the cliffhanging way it ended. I'm anxious to see what decisions Mena makes and how those decisions will affect those around her whom she has realized she loves. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of Tara Elizabeth in the future. Her writing will pull you into the story and her characters will keep you there.
  • Denounced (Exalted Trilogy: Book 2) on Aug. 11, 2013

This book was freakishly awesome!!!!! Denounced, which follows Exalted, is so full of action and emotion, that it was hard to put down. I devoured this book in a day. The MC, Mena, has the weight of the world on her very capable shoulders. I found myself laughing and crying as she struggled with situations that were completely out of her control. She is a strong young woman, but the time she lives in is unfair and harsh. I actually found myself fearing for her safety. At one point in the story, she learns a hard lesson about unfairness and it nearly destroys her. The ending was fabulous, yet I can hardly wait to read the third book. Hurry up, Tara Elizabeth. I really, really need to know what happens. This story will pull you in and hold you hostage. It's very well written and reads like a movie in my head. I can't wait to see what happens next!!
  • United (Exalted Trilogy: Book 3) on Feb. 08, 2015

I loved this book! It's the third and final of the Exalted trilogy. The entire book is filled with action as the characters head to Lake Toledo to warn them that their way of life is in danger. Tara Elizabeth has woven a fabulous story filled with frantic and dangerous travel, action, and romance. The ending actually made me tear up and I couldn't believe the story was over. I wish there was more. The end was absolutely fabulous, by the way!!! I'm looking forward to more books from this wonderful writer.
