Douglas Gallagher was born in Barnet in 1944. After a master’s degree from Bristol University, he spent a few years as lecturer in the French Department of Cardiff University before leaving to settle in Bordeaux, France, in 1971. He spent two years in freelance teaching before he and his French wife founded a successful translation and interpreting business that they managed for over thirty years. He has remained there ever since, and is now enjoying early retirement with his family of two children and five grandchildren.
