Dustin Porta

Biography

Dustin Porta was born in rural Pennsylvania. He studied poetry in college but turned to Science Fiction instead. After a brief stint as a professional sailor he moved to the Gulf Coast where he now lives and works as an artist and writer. He still writes poetry and paints seascapes and marine life. When not working on his art, he is at the local marina fixing a leaky wooden sailboat.
Before leaving his home state, Dustin published his first book of poetry, Pennsylvania Music, a collection of poems and short stories about Pennsylvania's historic Oil Region. The majority of Children of Atlas was written while living on a sailboat in the small, coastal community of Fairhope Alabama, a town known for its high concentration of writers and artists. His art and writing can be found all along the Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast as well as Northwest Pennsylvania.
Upcoming works include a second poetry chapbook focusing on the Gulf Coast, several collections of artwork and the sequel to Children of Atlas, slated for publication in early 2016. A series of shorter novellas paralleling the world of Atlas is also in production and will be released in conjunction with the sequel.

Smashwords Interview

Who are your favorite authors?
Many and varied. My earliest favorite has to be Poe. Then there's Chekhov, Hesse, Hawthorne, Melville, and of course Conrad. But I write Science Fiction and when it comes to influences there Arthur C. Clarke is tops. Vonnegut and Philip J. Farmer are pretty big influences. On the fantasy side, I grew up reading Weis and Hickman's Dragonlance series and even as an adult I can't get away from that heavy-handed kind of character development. Ursula K. Le Guin's Wizard of Earthsea was an important one too.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I read what I'm familiar with, which means a lot of classics. This is convenient because most of these are free. I'm especially fond of Plato.

I also read books by people I know. Turns out some of my friends are very good writers.
