Horses have been part of Dutch’s life, most of his life. As a foster child growing up on a farm, he became attached to the horses. After acquiring horses of his own, he worked with trainer Diane Sept to rehabilitate Tennessee Walking horses from show ring to trail. He also competed in long-distance endurance and competitive riding.
