Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing this book?
My little story behind this little book.

Worked on the manuscript since 2010, while I studied psychology in Montreal. The manuscript initially depicted only the parallels between Western and Eastern roots of psychology, the writing about the multidisciplinary practice and research in psychology came at a much later date. I submitted to many academic journals and received many encouraging feedbacks, all the chief editors commented the significance of my research and wished me to continue, but unfortunately their journals were not the appropriate one to publish it.

Reckoned the academic journals readership was limited, I put down my manuscript and tried to figure an alternate route for publishing, while focused in moving to Vancouver, British Columbia for the mild weather. In 2014, I decided to self publish my manuscript, and started writing about the multidisciplinary practice and research in psychology in layman term. Given the self publishing fee was at least USD$15,000, I launched a Kickstarter crowd funding project for it in 2015, without much experience in social media and online marketing back then, the Kickstarter project was a flop. So again, I put the manuscript down, but the dream to publish this book was always in my mind.

Just liked Paulo Coelho wrote in his book "The Alchemist" -
"when you continue to pursue your dream the whole universe would come down to help you."

In April, during my visit to Vancouver Central Library I noticed the self publishing lecture and workshop offered by their Inspiration Lab, I was so disappointed that I just missed these events by two hours, and had to wait until May. Bitterly, I swallowed my disappointment, and planned my schedule around the event in May. To my surprise upon my arrival at Vancouver Central Library on May 13, 2017, there was a whole day activities for writing and self publishing, I was not only able to attend the workshop I aimed for, but also took two more workshops to start self publishing my book.

Picked up where I left off in 2015 after the Kickstarter project, I eventually opened my computer file again on June 9, 2017 and commenced my first eBook self publishing project. Serendipity struck again! The next day I attended workshop about generativity, and was awakened by the facilitator's statement, "If you don't allow yourself to shine for the benefit of others, it is another form of selfishness", the statement was liked the essence of positive psychology for me. It prompted me to self publishing by myself and put it online as soon as possible.

At that time I had no experience or knowledge in Adobe InDesign to design and format my book, I recalled the library staff mentioned Lynda.com, and started watching it after completed the revision of my manuscript on June 26, 2017. After the Canada Day long weekend, I patronized the Vancouver Central Library Inspiration Lab often to finish my eBook project, because the powerful Adobe Indesign always made my laptop freeze.

In eight weeks of time, I revised my manuscript, learned to use Adobe Indesign software, and completed the self publishing on my own from A-Z including ISBN, image copyright, website and viral marketing.

On July 26, 2017 the book's website went online then Facebook page, a week later followed by the ePub, Kindle, PDF and LDR editions on
www.smashwords.com, Barnes and Noble, KOBO, also on August 2, 2017 the ePub was submitted to Vancouver Public Library Indie Author section.

I live out my preaching of positive psycholog in terms of meaning of my life, lifelong personal growth and personal wellness by becoming an author of eBook. The feelings of calm, peacefulness and contented were beyond description on the day my eBook went online.
