Mark Elswick

Biography

Mark Elswick has been a teacher, tutor, sportswriter, college professor, and author. Despite overcoming a life-threatening auto accident in 1992, perseverance and dedication kept him in the writing game. The title of “author” didn’t come until late-2011 when Modern History Press (MHP) published his first book, “Padman,” a collection of 13 shorts stories. Afterward, he ventured onto the independent scene. That two-year chapter of his writing career also saw months of podcast hosting and public speaking while he was self-publishing three novels and some short stories. Elswick recently returned to MHP and his first biography is currently in the works.

Smashwords Interview

Where are you from, and how did it influence your writing?
I grew up, for the most part, in Michigan. However, I lived in TN and VA for a few minutes as a little tyke, and lived in Kentucky for about three years, junior high years. However, my family and I always wound up back in MI. I really don't think that influenced my writing. Basically, becoming a published author wasn't something I aspired to do as a youngster. That came way after college.
When did you first start writing?
I was a sportswriter all through college. However, my first thought of actually, maybe, becoming a writing was when I wrote a paper in my senior AP English class. The teacher, the immortal Dr. Robert Cronin--RIP--pulled me aside after class, telling me how great and funny my essay was. Basically, it was a funny piece about the frustrations of playing golf.
